History of Rummy Card Game

Rummy is a card game where players need to match cards of the same rank or the same sequence on the same suit. The basic goal of a rummy card game is to build melds or sets of usually 4 cards of the same kind of the same rank.

There are multiple types of rummy card game. According to David Parlett, the Mexican game of Conquian is ancestral to all the rummy games. But the Mexican Rummy is actually derived from a Chinese game called Khanhoo, which dates up to the 18th century and is considered as the essence of the popular Mahjong.

Indian Rummy is another popular rummy card game. This version is popular in India and is considered to be a cross between Gin rummy and Rummy 500.

Each different version of a rummy card game has slightly different rules but they are all the same type of game, adapted for different times and the different cultures that play them.

Rummy card games are a large family of games based on the particular way of playing with the cards. At each turn, the player draws one or much cards from the pile and in turn, throws one unwanted card out.

On the Gin version of the game, which is considered one of the oldest versions, the goal is to get rid of all your cards by laying them in matched sets. When a player successfully gets rid of all his cards, he gets a score based on the cards the opponents still have on their hands.

But much more elaborated and complex versions of Rummy were developed in the 1930s. In a version called Contract Rummy, for example, the player gets dealt an increasing number of cards in each successive deal, turning the game much more difficult and complex.

Canasta is another type of Rummy that’s still popular nowadays. This version is from Bolivia and was created in the 1940s.
